The work of the RCRE focuses on both past and present educational processes, with historical, systematic, and empirical methods shaping its research. The RCRE is divided into three departments. 1  In addition, it has three working units explicitly focused on the transfer of scientific findings into (religious) pedagogical practice.

Under the umbrella of the Research Center for Religion and Education (RCRE), research projects on the topics of religion and education are networked across faculties and disciplines, viewed through the lens of social change. As religion can be understood both as a driver and a resource in globalization-induced conflict dynamics, the research and management of religious education processes represents a central point of leverage for social cohesion under the conditions of secularization and pluralization. With its focus on religion, the RCRE therefore makes a significant contribution to the research of democracy-building and plurality-sensitive socialization processes. Furthermore, the RCRE distinguishes itself through the transformation of research results into socially relevant areas: For example, with its Working Unit for Culture- and Religion-Sensitive Education (KuRs.B), the RCRE assumes responsibility for accompanying and actively shaping social change processes in a culture- and religion-sensitive manner by offering further education and certification programs for pedagogical professionals. The research center is primarily associated with the university's internal Profile Line "Liberty".
